Warren McCray and his family spend many of their weekends on the American River, where they are known for flying a pirate flag from their raft.
Now, McCray, 36, a handyman from West Sacramento, is being hailed as a lifesaver after rescuing a San Jose man from the river on Sept. 11.
Firefighters said John Vicente, 24, initially had a 50-50 chance of surviving when he was taken by ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center after being pulled from the water in Rancho Cordova.
